Kismet

 Do you believe in Kismet?

Artwork and original poem by Kieran Gonsalves (c) 2025. The title and poem were inspired by an unexpected request today.

There are times when you stop and wonder, is this kismet or just chance?
The odds of something happening as it did, seem too long at first glance

Take today’s artwork, for instance, ‘twas something about the ambience
The setting sun slowly fading into the dusk, gives a sense of impermanence

Cranes, by contrast, are universal symbols of transcendence and longevity
This paradox introduces a subtle tension, a brief pause for a moment of levity

Just as I was doing the final brushstrokes, a friend unexpectedly dropped by excited
‘Can you please paint me this crane?’, she asked. ‘Done, ’ said I, sounding foresighted

She looked at my painting in disbelief, ‘But .. how did you know?’, she blurted
‘I didn't. But I think we both can chalk it down to Kismet', I quietly asserted

Footnote: Here is the painting on sale at a local home furnishing store, that got my friend all excited
My friend was thrilled with my gift to her. Talk about Kismet.

I don't believe in Kismet but I do believe that God plans things to work out as He wills for us.,and sometimes things become a coincidence. (WhatsApp comment from a very dear friend in Calgary, Canada)

@⁨Dr. Sandra Simon⁩ abd @⁨Hayley Gonsalves⁩, you both have come to St Simon’s - do you remember the stained glass panels
A few days ago, a new parishioner asked me about two panels. Only them did it occur to me that there were 7 panels each depicting a sacrament
That inspired me to create my own set. Something I hadn’t done before
It was a very fun experience drawing with an intent to show the main symbolism yet remain true to Catholic teaching
I say this in all humility- the sketches came together unexpectedly well in terms of artistic expression and esthetics. This could only be through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit
I was spurred to paint all 7 concurrently, something I hadn’t done or experienced before - this ensured the paint was consistent across all seven
And the cherry on top of the cake was to complete it in 3 days on the Feast of the Assumption of our BVM. Feeling blessed - Kieran

Indian philosophy uses the term _Kismet_ from the Arabic/Turkish has come to mean fate or destiny, often with a sense of inevitability or divine will—something that was ‘meant to be’ aka Que Sera Sera

Christian theology says it’s God’s will through the works of the Holy Spirit for the common good

In today’s events, I was happy to gift my friend the painting, which thrilled her and brought me joy to see her smile. As you know, I give my paintings to friends. So a definite win-win by something I had no influence over

Quite amusing how it all transpired. She’s the happy owner of a painting that the shop was charging $40/- 😊 Kieran
