Apples in a bowl

The Esoteric Art of Painting Light and Shadow

Watercolor painting and artsy poem by Kieran Gonsalves (c) 2026, as I continue practising (bumbling along) the elusive art

Another reckless attempt at trying to capture the magic of light and shadow.
A bowl of Red apples in a Crystal bowl with a sunburst adding to the glow!

The contrasting shadow a hint of Burnt sienna blended in with Ultramarine blue.
The dense crystal bowl randomly scattering light as it passes through and through!

Fresh apples in Alazarin crimson with a touch of Crimson red add allure to the art.
Finish it with a cool wash of Cerulean blue and Payne's grey for the background part!

Light makes one approach the subject with humility, one can only try but there's more
But thus just adds to the mystique with much to learn, and so many aspects to explore

You are so good with your brush (and so brave!) to represent light and shadow thru water colours! It is so HARD to master as a medium! (WhatsApp comment from my XLRI classmate)

Thanks Nilu. There’s definitely an element of risk v reward
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
So much to explore, but one has to think about it.

👌I believe light and shadow painting is very difficult. You have done a good job Kieran. I do remember going to a painting class when I was a kid. The teacher had taught us to concentrate on one source of light,in those days only the sunlight and then paint around it. The paining/drawing came out all wrong in most cases. you have the window and also a crystal bowl. multiple sources at different angles. True, Sanjeev. Thanks for your perspective. There is so much to learn. For me the challenge is to remember that less is more. ❣️ - Kieran
