Dhoros

 Rustic life in Dhoros

Original artwork and poem by Kieran Gonsalves (c) 2026, remembering our 2017 holiday

The charming village of Dhoros tucked in the quaint Trodoos mountain range
Was our inspired holiday destination for two odd weeks of heavenly change
Of traditional Cypriot life surrounded by vineyards a thousand years old
Narrow winding cobbled streets with old stone houses and of stories untold
The 600-year-old Church of Panagia Galaktotrofousasv is their joy and pride
So too breathtaking views of almond orchards and vineyards along the hillside
We arived shortly after the grape harvest to find raisins drying in the sun
This region makes Camandaria, the world famous dessert wine loved by everyone
But it’s the age-old traditional hospitality that grips and stirs your soul
When you stop by the local kafeneio for a glass of Zivania to make you whole
At dusk all the villagers comes to the town square to intermingle and socialize
How about backgammon over coffee or grilled Halloumi cheese; Live life king-size

This is Cyprus, ain't it ? Barnabas, Paul went there.
600 year old church ... Your poem is nice covering the past to the present...😍
Your painting reminds me of the olden types of houses and peaceful surroundings. (WhatsApp comment from a very dear college friend in Pune)

Yes, Joe - this is Cyprus where St Paul and St Barnabas traveled and installed St Lazarus (resurrected brother of Martha and Mary) as the Bishop of the Roman town of Kition (now bustling Larnaca) - Kieran

I worked in Cyprus for 3.5 years, and Sandra joined me when we first got married
We returned in 2017, exactly 25 years after we left Cyprus to show our kids the island

We chose to live up in the mountains but the sea is about 45 to 60 minutes drive to Limassol which has a beautiful marina by the sea. - Kieran

This is a very beautiful part of the world and I was blessed to work there from 1989 through 1992. We returned 25 years later and met some of our friends who were still very warm and welcoming- feeling blessed - Kieran

Thanks, Pearl. It was a holiday to remember. Sandra and I left Cyprus in December 1992 and we returned 25 years later with our kids to relive those memories. God is gracious and good ❣️ - Kieran

Yes indeed. The white exteriors keep homes cooler in the summer heat. - Kieran
