Fractured Relations

Fractured Relations

Original artwork and poem by Kieran Gonsalves (c) 2025

Life has its ways of pulling lovers apart
But it can ne’er quench the desires of the heart
A loved one sacrificing it all for the front line
Bereft lover gazes out the window for a sign
Alzheimer's steals the memory of a beloved spouse
Even together, it’s like no one’s in the house
A misunderstanding can lead to a thaw in relations
Each waiting foolishly for the other to rise to the occasion
Grim reaper snatches your soulmate without warning
Left too much unsaid now it’s too late; truly heartburning
Far too busy reaching personal ambitions and goals
No time for simple companionship and tender emotions
Live in the moment, celebrate with friends and family
Carpe diem, and you’ll live ever happily

@⁨Kieran Gonsalves⁩ - your watercolors and poems are a daily spot of colorful joy! Thanks for sending them our way. (A comment from an alumni WhatsApp group)

Thanks @⁨KP Naidu⁩, each day is a new adventure. Totally spontaneous. Today I came across a sculpture of a couple embracing with intentional gaps and notches. Got me thinking about imperfect relationships.
I decided to paint with bold colors to obscure the couple - you kinda see them but not entirely
I christened the painting fractured memories
The poem, if it plays out, always comes at the end. In this case it did
Glad you liked it πŸ₯° - Kieran Gonsalves

Harsh reality for one’s soul to accept and try to move forward. πŸ™ (A very dear friend who suffered the loss of a son recently on WhatsApp)

I really feel for you. Being a man of deep faith, this is just the journey, there is the promise of Heaven where Our Redeemer has prepared a mansion for us (John 14:2-3) - Kieran Gonsalves

Grim Reaper is such an important metaphor for Death! (WhatsApp comment from a dear friend in Poona)

Death is inevitable and we never know the date or hour of our calling. Yet we live like we and everyone we love are indestructible
Aye, the Grim Reaper strikes when least expected - Kieran

Thanks Melville. There are so many ways relationships can get frayed so it seems pertinent to remind ourselves to live in the moment. Glad you liked it - Kieran

Today's art work is moving? Is it personal? Feels like it? (WhatsApp comment from my classmate who appreciates all my artwork)

Hmm. All my poems are spontaneous from the heart. That’s just my style
I’ve always had open communications even with my parents, grandparents, uncles/aunts, cousins and friends. As a result I leave nothing in the proverbial tank. Unfortunately many of my nearest and dearest, have waited too long. Some lost their soul mates unexpectedly. A dear neighbor lost her 40 year old son a few months ago. A few dear friends died a slow painful death but in all cases I made my peace with them. Having said that a childhood friend who drifted away from us all, focusing on making $$ died far too quickly two years ago. That was a gut punch and we rallied to meet in person ASAP, which we did last week in Vegas after 35 years. Feeling 10 years younger - Kieran

Thanks so much. I forward your paintings to several people depending on who I feel will resonate with. My daughter's in laws are devout Catholics and so I send them all your Saint painting. Treesa loves it and sends it to her sisters (WhatsApp reply to above comment)

Beautiful, poignant words, Kieran. Coming on the heels of our heartwarming reunion made me even more glad that we seized the moment; this time will pass all too soon. Stay well, my friends, smile often, laugh if you feel like it, and shed a tear for those we loved - God bless!
