Pastels

 Pastels

Whimsical painting and original poem by Kieran Gonsalves (c) 2025, as I continue to explore wet on wet painting.

Pastel colours by design are light and breezy,

No harsh tones, just something nice and easy.

Light pinks are said to bring a touch of femininity.

An ethereal feeling of romance and even sanguinity.

Pastel lavenders suggest calmness and spirituality,

Lofty mountains gently remind us of our mortality.

But fear not, pastel yellows bring a jolt of cheer,

A sign of new life amidst a backdrop that’s austere.

What would life be without pastels? A lot duller

So tell me, what is your favourite pastel colour?

Lavender is my favorite pastel. It is so soothing. (whatsApp comment from a dear relative in Houston, TX)

Have you tried growing it? It does quite well in California which has a Mediterranean climate - Kieran

I have. They grow as annuals here. This time I am growing it in a pot and will bring it indoors in the cold. (WhatsApp reply to above comment)

I had mine in the ground but I overwatered my shrub and it died. I need to find that perfect balance between not watering and overwatering - Kieran

I love all pastel shades. Difficult to choose for me - I'd go for the ...... ( You guessed it ! ) greens 🤣🤣 (WhatsApp comment from my dearest sister)

Mum always said, ‘Greens are good for you.’ You just embraced her advice all through 😊 - Kieran

About a hundred years ago
- Pink was seen as a strong, decided color — a paler version of red — and considered more appropriate for boys.
- Blue interestingly, was considered delicate and dainty, and often associated with the Virgin Mary, making it more fitting for girls.

Now it’s the opposite 😅 - Kieran

Seeing the present atmospheric global upheavals, your painting may not be called whimsical... There have been blood red and pink clouds, grey streams, purple mountains, yellow volcanic remnants and trees as they are.
The poem is truly nice, rhyming and meaningful. Looks like, there's poetry in your bloodline.
By the way my favourite colour is Pink. (WhatsApp comment from a dear classmate)

Thanks Joe. Yes, I am exploring more nuanced multi-hued skies. No doubt inspired by the striking Californian sunsets; a smashup of pinks, purples and grays
Appreciate your props on my poetry. I try to make my artwork entertaining and informative. Glad you liked it - Kieran

That’s very kind of you, Joe. I’ve completed about 300 paintings. And have now experimented different techniques and styles to be more comfortable doing a variety of paintings.
Portraits are the last unexplored bastion but I learned it needs a different type of paper, hot pressed. Will look for it next - Kieran

Hmm. This one was interesting. It was whimsical but I kept thinking the foreground is sorta incomplete. Shows you how much I know about painting 😅😂😂 - Kieran

Thanks. I had to hold myself back from texturing the foreground. It’s all about letting go, and being happy with what you got. Hard!! - Kieran

Oh, yes...one has to learn when to stop adding more to a painting or a sketch....otherwise, we keep on adding stuff, which takes away from its best interpretation. (WhatsApp reply to above comment)
